My hen Beaker passed part of a broken egg and is sick...help

How old is your girl, this is probably not the problem, but may or may not be related, could she be broody? Asking b/c of the two big smelly poops, broody hens have huge smelly poops. Could she have accidentally broken egg herself while sitting on it? Could wet vent area be vent gleet? Just giving other suggestions.

I thought maybe she had gone broody when she did not come out of the nest box...but the egg yolk on her legs along with her posture and tail pumping along with her depressed attitude made me think broken egg or shell less egg. and the fact that 'stuff' is still coming out of her and making her a mess. I could be wrong and I hope I am. She is sleeping now and I hope tomorrow brings a better day for her.

Hubby and I cried cleaning her up again tonight. We do love the critters in our care..Beaker is his girl. He picked her out as a baby and named her. She rides around on his shoulder like a falcon and 'talks and sings to him'.

She is only 2 years old.

fingers crossed and sends good thoughts out into the universe.

She sounds like a sweetheart and yes i am sending positive thoughts for Beaker.

. All of my birds are pets,so i completely understand how upsetting this is.

She is still alive this morning...and seems to be doing better. She is eating some, gave her all her normal food and water, cleaned and relined the crate. Checked her bum and it seems to be doing better. Didn't need to wash her off this morning. She was humming a little while ago.. Now she is sleeping again. No more sign of egg yolk or white coming out of her. She is pooping but it is still gross but getting better.

Thank you for the good thoughts coming this way for her.

I just found your thread and am rooting for Beaker to make it! I don't know if it's any help at all but maybe some antibiotics in her water - if it is peritonitis. Good luck - she's a fighter and that's good.

She is doing okay still, I turned the heat down in my room (she is in a crate in there) so it is not quite so warm. she is standing up and looking around, she has eaten some more of her food and greens today. I did get some calcium into her and some electrolytes. She is making her soft quiet buck buck sounds but still has her tail down like a dog that has been bawled out. She is looking pretty happy right now..fingers crossed.

Beaker is hanging in there. She is still in the crate in my room. She is eating and drinking well be she has not laid any eggs since last.week. The vet is happy with her progress and it is all depending in when she tries to lay again. If she does okay with that we just have to make sure she passes it okay. Sigh what a relief...she is not out of the woods but she has a good chance.

Thank you for all the kind words and sending positive thoughts for our little Beaker.

I think I have heard that holding a hot compress for awhile over her vent and whole back end area might help ease out the egg. Do it several times a day. I'm a great believer n hot compresses for people related stuff too!!
