So when I went out to water the flock this morning, I found one of my rhode island reds had broke her nail off right to the quick. I took her inside and cleaned her foot and used cornstarch to stop it from bleeding. Then I returned her to the flock. Went back out a couple hours later and she was dripping drops of blood again. So I brought her back inside, washed and cornstarched again but this time I had her just sit on my lap for about 30 min. I tried putting cornstarch on a tiny piece of paper towel and wrapped vet wrap over top to hold it on her toe. Well I'm not a doctor and I guess I did it wrong because it came off when I put her down. It wasnt bleeding anymore so I decided to take her back out. I figured she was getting hot because she just kept leaving her mouth open. She seems fine now out there, but I'm concerned about her reopening it again. All I have is cornstarch, vet wrap, and pine tar (had to purchase that when my roo got hurt). Should I try the pine tar and vet wrap if it starts bleeding again?

Yes, use the pine tar. Make sure the toe is clean and dry before you apply it. Keep her with you until the pine tar skins over.

It should be ok. I don't know if pine tar would stop the bleeding or not to be honest don't have much experience with it.
If it starts back i'd just starch it again.
And don't worry too much, foot injuries bleed alot it looks much worse than it is.
In the morning after she's been off it all night it should be scabbed over and on the way to healing.:)

my pine tar is very liquidy. It never seems to harden up, even on my roosters wound. just sticky. should i try putting the vet wrap over it?

Can you just stick her in a dog crate with food and water overnight on a clean old towel? I don’t put anything on those, but some put bandaids or duct tape on them. By tomorrow she should be clotted well enough to let out. They sometimes will be sore and limp for a week or more.

Sounds like if your pine tar never seems to dry, then a lot of dirt/debris would stick to it and make a mess.
If it's stopped bleeding, I would just put her back with the flock, no wrapping. She will be a bit sore for a couple of days. Broken and ripped off toenails bleed like crazy, it can look like someone is dying with the blood trail they leave. I've never wrapped or put anything on any of mine and they healed just fine.

So far no one is bothering her. I just let my roo out of the crate yesterday. Hoping I don't have to re crate him. As long as they are all getting along I'm going to try to leave them loose. It is so cold here right now I want them to be able to snuggle for warmth at night.
