My hen has a large lump on the back of her head 😥

My white rock has developed a large lump on the back of her head. She recently stopped laying so I pick her up, just to check her out, which she hates, and I noticed it. Feels pretty hard, and I can't tell if it hurts or not cause she's my one chicken that doesn't really like getting messed with. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. ❤❤

Do you have a rooster? It could be from him grabbing the neck to hold onto while mating. Does it feel like an abscess?

It is possible it could be a parasite or disease which could spread to the rest of the flock. You might want to separate her from the flock. It could also be a failed predator attack but, on that certain spot its unlikely. Since she stopped laying it most likely is not the rooster. There are certain parasites that could make a lump like that. You may want to check with your local Vet. Good Luck

It feels pretty firm, and it's not red, nor does it look irritated...I thought it was from the rooster at first, I thought she had a patch underneath with some new feathers growing in underneath but when she stopped laying I picked her up to get a better look. Plus my rooster is a silkie so he's not that big, she probably outweighs him...she's eating, drinking, and running around the yard like she's living her best life. I'll just have to quarantine her and get her into the vet for a little chicken check up...

Any update? My chicken who looks exactly like yours has a lump that looks exactly like your chickens! Super odd. Did you get any answers or find out how to help her?
