So I went on vacation to California this past weekend and I came back to see my hen with her left eye open and right eye closed. I need help on knowing what this is and what I can use to solve this situation. I also want to know if this is a disease or not. She is brooding right now, i don’t know if this is something hens may do when brooding. Also, my hen is almost a year old. She also has scaly leg, I need help on curing that too, we’ve been putting Vaseline on her leg but that doesn’t seem to work.

I took this picture when she left her coop to go eat.

How old is she? She may have gotten something in her eye, or another reason for the closed eye. Can you open the eye and look around for any debris, such as a seed or dirt? Look for any eye bubbles or gunk. You can use some human eye drops, saline eye wash, Vetericyn, or Terramycin ointment into the eye. Have you ever had a respiratory disease in your flock before? Was she vaccinated for Mareks disease, or is she having any trouble with her legs or wings?

I got her when she was about 5 months old and she’s like 10 or maybe a year old by now I can’t remember. I haven’t checked her eye because she is laying on her eggs right now. And we haven’t vaccinated her for Mareks disease. She does have problems with her legs, she has scaled leg which is a little parasite that lives under the scales of her leg, we’ve been treating that with Vaseline. I only have a rooster and a hen that’s it, the rooster has never gotten any respiratory problems
