We bought some new bouron red turkey chicks and one of my white hens is acting very motherly to them. She has never had any chicks of her own. She is around a year old. She is keeping the other hens away from them even tho the chicks are in a different pen and all she can do is hear them. Any reasons why she would be doing this? We thought that she was just being mean since we did add two new hen but she stopped being mean to them and started to protect the baby. We have never had this happen before.

Sounds like you have a broody hen. It wouldn't hurt to give her a baby of her own if she's feeling motherly. Or even one of the baby turkeys. But if you do that it will be hard to separate the turkey from the chicken when there older. We have chickens raise ducklings because we didn't have any broody ducks. It does get hard when there older tho. But what evers better for you. Or you could just let her be

Well it sounds like she's gone past the sitting stage. You can try but it sounds like she's moved onto the baby chicks. And some chickens will sit and sit and sit Until a baby comes. She probably just wants a little one now

Sounds like she would be a great mother but, if the chicks are tiny, she may injure or flatten them just because of her size. Maybe you could find a young turkey poult for her so she can be fulfilled as a mama.

My chicks are almost two months old so they are still very tiny, but i was thinking of introducibg them under very watchfull eye when they get a little older. If she still isnt over her mama stage.
