When one of my hens is about to lay an egg, clear liquid starts dripping. The other hens gather to drink it up. Then a broken shell comes out with no yoke. The other hens gobble it up. I have isolated her and have mixed her feed with eggshell at a ratio of 1/3 shells to 2/3 feed. It has been two days so far. Any thoughts?

How old is she? Young or old? Some birds whether they are too young yet and their egg machines are not yet in gear, or older birds that their machines are no longer working can have these troubles. Sounds like this bird either is not getting enough calcium or it is not being absorbed properly.

Get some human calcium. Caltrate is a great brand to use because it contains Vitamin D and Magnesium in the right amounts. Break the pill in half and you are going to give her a half a pill a day. Take this half pill and break it into smaller pieces, small enough to put in some raisins. Birds love raisins and they won't even know they are getting meds.

After a couple of days, this should help her put a shell on. Keep giving her these calcium for a few weeks. When you start to see a lot of calcium bumps on the egg shell, you can back down to every other day or every 3 days.

Good luck and keep us posted!! :-)

The hen is somewhere short of 18 months old. After mixing her feed with eggshells at a ratio of 1/3 shells to 2/3 feed, she laid a normal egg on the third day. Today she laid another normal egg. It looks like she was lacking in calcium. I feed all my hens with Dumor brand feed which claims to be complete and that no additional calcium is necessary. Apparently that is not true.
