Last week my favorite hen, Ester, started loosing her balance and then started turning her head and couldn't walk. I did some research and thought she had a fungus but Lee's Feed said she probably had Wye Neck a vitamin def. She said it was probably to late. I've been giving her vitamins and she seems to get better but then at night she becomes twisted again. Can anyone help?

Hi @In training :frow Welcome To BYC

Can you give us more information:
How old is your hen?
What type of food/treats do you feed?
What type of vitamins are you giving her?
Has she been injured that you know of?

Having a twisted neck does sound like Wry Neck - this is a neurological symptom of several conditions like vitamin/nutritional deficiencies, head injury/trauma and disease like Marek's, Newcastles and Avian Lymphoid Leukosis.

If she seems to be responding to vitamin therapy that is good. You want a vitamin that has E, B1 (thiamine) and Selenium. You can also use human vitamins - buy Vitamin E and a human B-Complex (no iron) - give 400IU daily of vitamin E and 1/2tab of Vitamin B-Complex. Offer some chopped egg, tuna or crushed nuts to give Selenium (this helps with the uptake of E).

See that she is drinking and encourage her to eat. If she is staying twisted up, this may make it difficult for her to get what she need and you will need to help her.

Thanks so much for your interest in my beautiful Esters case. After 10 days of treating with a human liquid vitamin high in E and Selenium she is back roosting with the other girls and chasing bugs! I have been feeding my hens Purenia pelets with omega 3 but read and article about cat food so Ive been giving them salmon cat food and cheap sardines until I can find a feed with selenium.

Ester was a year old March no head injury that I know of. but a coon got in the coop a month ago and killed one, injuring another and terrorizing the whole flock

I'm glad to hear that Ester has recovered and is back with the girls!

I'm not sure how many feeds you may find that have Selenium listed. You can still offer her Selenium rich foods as "treats" if you need to. You don't need much, so a little Sardines, egg, tuna or crushed nuts will give her what she needs.

Thank you for giving us an updated, I hope she continues to do well:)
