Please help me! I have 7 chickens and I built my own coop for them, they have a 6 x 6 ft square space to sleep, and a door about a foot tall leading them down to another place that is about 10 x 10 ft wide, I let them down in the bigger part this morning and one of my 5 month old Easter Egger hens ( Maggie ) went back up into the smaller compartment and walked all the way around it, while occasionally lookin up in a corner and scratching at it :(

In the 10 x 10 ft room, there is a regular door that I open that lets them outside, when I opened it, my hen Maggie came storming down and jumped around outside, and then was completely normal and fine! I haven't seen any decrease in food or water intake, does she have a problem? Does she want to be alone? Or is this normal behavior? Please help me, she is one of my favorite chickens!

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

Is this a new coop area? Chickens are afraid of everything new. This fear protects them from any possible accidents or death. Your bird will get used to it eventually. Try using some treats to persuade her to use the ramp. Make her feel comfortable using it. It takes them time to get over new changes. She should be just fine.

Enjoy your birds and we do welcome you to our flock!

On the other hand maybe she is clairvoyant and knows things no one else does! Sorry just kidding. Everything loves to eat chickens, so being wary is crucial to their survival.

I'm glad you joined us.

X2 on TwoCrows. Also, she may have been looking for a place to fly up to. My chickens sometimes circle before flying up to a roost or somewhere else.
