My hen might be laying eggs soon.....

I think my hen might be laying eggs soon (according to previous owner whom I recently acquired this hen from), I'm a first timer so I just kinda made a nesting box out of a cardboard box and dried tall grass..... do you think it will be sufficient enough? And I would appreciate any other ideas on building a nesting box if you guys have any, or just any tips in general for a first timer.

BTW, I also have a milk crate that I found and was planning on using it but can't find my damn handsaw to cut up an opening, which is why I'm using the cardboard box for now and hoping it will work fine.

How are you setting it up? The risk in that cardboard box or the milk crate is that she might perch on the edge and turn it over. But then she might not. As long as it is reasonably stable it should be fine. Some people just sit a cardboard box in the corner of the coop on the coop floor.

Some people will try to tell you that you have to do nests a certain way but you don't. If you look through these threads you can see what some of us have done that work fine.

Thanks for replying, I have a pair (rooster and hen) in the coop...... and they only seem to hang out on higher ground on wooden planks that I have set up off the ground. I currently have the nesting box on the floor tuck away in the corner, should I move the nesting box onto the top and leave it up there? Or is it fine on the bottom tucked away in the corner?

UPDATE : Finally found the stupid handsaw that the gnome hid and cut the milk crate to make a nesting box. Added tall dried grass and sat it on top shelf of the coop while keeping the cardboard nesting box on the floor in the corner just in case. Hopefully, I get me some cute little Shamo Hybrid babies! Who wants one? Bidding starts at Tree Fiddy! Hahaha.
