Hello BYC !!

I have a question !

One of my hen , just hatched a baby chick and the other eggs she was sitting on did not hatch , so I threw then in the trash , but now she is not laying anymore and she is still sitting on the others eggs,..

What can I do about it ?

Thanks !

When a hen is broody, determined to hatch chicks that's what she wants to do. Let her enjoy her chick - if you didn't break up her eggs put them back. Maybe it was too early for the others to hatch.

Welcome to BYC!

Yes, you may have prematurely thrown her eggs out that had potential to hatch. She will not want to set on eggs again until she has successfully brooded and raised this baby. So let her do her thing, and she will probably be back on the eggs soon.

Good luck with your broody and her baby and welcome to our flock!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Is this the same hen that hatched a chick about a week ago? Does she have the chick or did you take the chick away? If she doesn't have a chick to take care off, she is going to keep trying to brood eggs, possibly for quite a while longer. If you want her to stop being broody and start laying eggs again, You might want to go ahead and "break" her of being broody, some hens will keep it up for months on end, she won't start laying again until she stops being broody and if they are not eating properly it is not good for their health. Here is a nice thread/article on breaking broodys https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/181289/how-to-break-a-broody-hen the cage method usually works well, some are pretty stubborn and will take a week or so, but most do give up. I like to hand small food/water bowls on the side of the cage since a lot of hens will try to sit in bowls. Some people also put a small fan under the cage to cool the bird off more.

Hi guys !! I have another question. I left 3 eggs in the coop for my hem to hatch since she is in the process of doing it. The eggs were there yesterday but when i went out today 1 egg is gone and not chick. What does this mean ? Do rats eats eggs ?

All kinds of things eat eggs...rats, mice, snakes, squirrels, other critters although it had to be something small since it didn't eat the hen!

I am so sorry! You are going to have to do some predator proofing to make sure nothing is getting in.
