I live in a residential neighborhood and own 5 hens. I have 1 buff Orpington, 3 barred rocks and one polish. My buff started laying in November and the rocks just started this week. The polish is not laying and making me rethink her tenure in the yard (7 months old). My buff always lets out a good holler when she lays and egg but otherwise is quiet. Not so with these barred rocks! These birds woke up the family this morning at 6:45. At 7 I went out to see what all the racket was, and they were just hanging out in the pen. Granted, I had 2 eggs in the nest, but geez! The eggs weren't even warm so they must have laid them awfully early. So, What's with all the darn noise! It went on for 45 minutes. My neighbors are going to put ME in a pot if this goes on... help? advise?

Well,

I know as a fact that the girlies do like to make some noise, but usually that wont affect the neighbors that much if you give the FRESH EGGS.

My hens make quite a racket, too. Luckily my neighbors are far enough away. I've never understood people who say their hens are quiet.

However, I will just second Fresh Eggs' advice--neighbors are much more forgiving when you explain yourself with a carton of eggs in hand. At least, mine forgave me after our hens chased her as she tried to mow her lawn with her riding mower one day!

This week I think all 6 of my hens decided that every time any one of them was on a nest they would let the neighborhood know about it. They've been doing a kinda growling cluck thing running in and out of the coop to check on their hen sisters. Maybe now that all of them finally know what its like to lay an egg they'll calm down some. At this rate I could have kept a rooster.

I started giving eggs to the neighbors today a half dozen at a time......
