My Homestead becoming a reality..

It is coming along nice for you. I am glad you were able to find someone to clear your land.It is great to read you have no mortgage either. What was the cost of your home and land?We still have 12 years on ours and we only have 1 acre! Dh says in a few years we can buy another place.

Do your kids kill and eat the rabbits? I think rabbits are a great meat option, but my family is weird about eating animals they(really I) raised. What a waste of good meat! I had a relative in Hungary rasie rabbits. Hard part for me is killing them.Chickens are way easier(for me) to kill.

I can't wait to see your gardens in the spring.

Instead of field fencing, take a look at horse wire. It's 2"x4" and keeps out visitors that can go through the 4"x4" field fencing. I used field fencing and a determined animal can wiggle through it. I have had problems with it breaking and creating bigger holes. I have horses and it just does not hold up. I have 3 rolls of horse wire now that will start replacing the field fencing.

Very nice rabbit set up. I'll bet you could build those in your sleep by now.

That looks beautiful Boyd! I agree, chicken tractors or rabbit tractors would be great. Will you be having dual purpose or meat birds? That may give you an idea of where you'll be going. Of course, if it were me I'd be filling the entire open space up with chicken houses and runs

I was lucky.. I found a bank owned house for around 40k.. 2 years ago it was listed 6x times the asking price... I eat all wabbits that don't produce.. I have a papered, pedigreed buck hat provides us lots of wondrous babies, and his sires have done that as well... but we don't just focus on rabbits, as rabbit meat is very lean........ The kids are part of the processing process... They know where their food comes from, and where and what it takes to put food on the plate.

Lastly, I hate killing... Anything. Period.. But I say a prayer and make it as painless as possible.. That's the reason why I only get a deer a season, where-as I could take a bunch of half aimed shots that might or might not make the cut..

As far as the spring gardens goes.... I want to sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo Grow my mini farm into a csa, but I want some more practice, and more insight into my meat production. I know how to do it one way, how about 2-3 more........

John Sacket...................... I went out hunting, hoping for a fat bear...... What I got was a gunshot injuun.

Boyd , Congratz on the new place and job! Nice looking piece of land you got there. I love to see peoples dreams become reality. And no mortgage, wow! It's great feeling, ain't it. I've got a 10 acre homestead with no mortgage. I was wondering how windy is it there? If you were going to have ducks or raise duckweed, a windmill would definitely be a plus! You could also have a water tower to supply the house. The more off the grid the better! So many possibilities, goats , sheep, and ducks. Oh I forgot turkeys, I'm adding some here in the spring, probably Bourbon Reds. Just so happy this is becoming a reality for you.

That is a awesome deal on that property.I keep telling my dh we should take a loss on our current place and buy something cheap.

If you decide on fruitng trees get those in soon.I regret not planting them the first year, because by now I would have some good size apple, plum, and cherry trees.

Congratulations on the new place boyd!

What about a single Dexter cow, you can have the steer calves processed for meat and sell the heifer calves. They're small and easy to manage. Plus, MILK!!

Don't forget space for a nice garden!!
