Hi All,

I recently moved cross country and the house I bought came with… you guessed it CHICKENS… not just some sweet layers but also 2 roosters. I have researched (a lot on here) chickens and had decided prior to buying the house that I was ready to take on the chicken farmer life.

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? A month ago… Had a friend in college who went through the learning process and got chickens, that was my inspiration for wanting them.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now? 15 (2-6 are roosters) 5 came with the house (2 roo and 3 layers the other 10 came from the farm store trying to get more hens)

(3) What breeds do you have? No idea hope you all can help!

(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com? Google!

(5) What are some of your other hobbies? We also hunt and garden. We have 3 dogs a 11 year old pug a 3 year old Rhodesian Ridgeback/boxer and a 150lb 1 year old Malamute (yes that is over sized). The malamute is the only one who doesn’t want to eat my chickens haha

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you’d like to share. My dogs aren’t really a hobby i guess but taking care of them is a full time job. Our malamute is “special
” he came from a very bad situation and needs a ton of time and attention to feel loved, on the other hand he is incredibly smart. It is just my husband and i for now however we have 6 nieces that we adore and love to spoil.

How many hens do you have? A rooster can handle 10 hens., any less and the hens get overbred, damaged, and sometimes worse. -multiply that by the number of roosters you have, and you'll probably find you either need a lot more hens or a lot less roosters. Somehow I think they were deliberately left behind. Very hard to find homes for roosters, they mainly end up coming to dinner as the entree
