Last night i told dh that the third week of July we were making a trip to his mom's cousins house. He asked me why and i told him because they will be killing (or is it culling) some meat birds and i want to see how it's done. Oh my gosh you would have thought i was a serial killer or something!!!

He could not believe that i am really serious about this.
It's bad enough that i have a grass fed steer getting ready to slaughter in the next couple of weeks but the thought that we will be doing our own meat birds seemed to put him over the edge. He thinks i'm getting a little weird. He'll be liking it when he's eating delicious home grown meat though!!!

If it makes you feel any better, my husband is thinking I am a bit weird too. I am just now on property that allows me to have chickens and a garden. Even the mention of raising cows or goats for meat or milk makes him flip. I don't get it. He is like the worlds biggest meat and potato guy!

My DH abd I are both hunters so when I said I wanted to get chickens for their meat he didn't have a problem with the killiong part or the fact that we would be eating them. What he has a problem with still is me going head over heels for chickens.

He already picked out the one he wanted though for egg laying lol. He said he needed to have at least one of the many chicks to be his. Of course the more I do to gets us self reliant the more he thinks I'm crazy.

Don't mention goats around my DH, he said he would never drink goats milk. I'm trying to convince him that I need more land and a couple goats lol.

Exactly, the self reliant thing makes my DH think I have lost my last marble. 50 years ago people wouldn't have thought twice. I asked my grandma about the processing chicken part and she told me about how it was done and ended her story with "you'd be better off going to the grocery store!" it made me LOL!

Goats milk I am told is not too bad! I bet it is great to cook with! Mine (my DH) wouldn't drink it either!

I totally understand! I would love to go hang for a day and learn how to process chickens. I went squirrel hunting once and processed all of my own squirrels... and everyone else's too!

I was eating chicken the other day for dinner (store-bought - haven't gotten meat birds... YET!) and my BF said "I can't believe you're eating chicken... don't you feel guilty??" Haha! I just laughed at him... he thinks I'm mental too... haha!!

My DH thinks i've gone nuts too , I was looking on line about making butter and cheese from goats milk .
And he said " we havn't even bought the goats yet.
And he won't get meat birds cause we had them years ago and he hated killing them.
I don't get . When I was about 10 my Uncle would pay me and my cousin a quarter for each chicken we gutted and plucked.
But he says he feels like a murderer.

He's such a tender soul, good thing he has little old heartless me, lol
