My husband thinks i'm CRAZY!!!!!!!!!!!

WHat's going on here? I thought we as guys should be the first to be all for the live off the land kill your own meat type thing. I find it funny that you all have this much trouble convincing your guys to go self reliant. I'm getting myself ready for it. The economy is not looking any better lately and there seems to be no end to the preservatives and other chemicals they pump into factory farm animals.

My family on the other hand... They don't think I can bring myself to butcher animals but the way things are going I don't think I'll flinch when it comes time to cull my quail, broilers and extra roosters. I have little objections to my meat rabbits since I rabbit hunt now and then. But one thing...sure ain't fun milking resistant goats.

I'm pretty lucky I found a husband that really took to our traditions here. I've helped butcher our own steers and chickens before I was even 10 years old. (always missed out on the pigs, I think I was at school or something). He picked up on all the steps my Dad use to do and now the last couple years just the 2 of us can do a steer, plus cut, grind and wrap it.

I would rather not do the actual killing part if I can avoid it, I will. If not, oh well.

Just yesterday he was petting our friendly 2 month old calf saying hard to believe we'll be eating him. I told him "yeah but by then there will be some new Billy (his name) around"(we have about 90 head of cattle) I think that was always the trick growing up that I still use, have enough other animals around to transfer my attention on when the end was coming for the older animal.

Well today about 1/2 my Cornish crosses go, pretty good timing since I got my new Cochin chicks this week. But I do feel a bit wimpy since my husband will be doing head chopping. Dang it, they still peep like little chicks!

My DH thought it was crazy me and my chickens until he TASTED them....

my DH, God bless him...he thinks i'm crazy, but that's what he digs about me! he says he likes me a little crazy, it makes him 'happy'. i think that's code for, 'makes me feel more stable!'

well until i can talk hubby into meat birds i just found out my nephew's fiance is working at her family's organic farm and they sell shares in a steer and they have meat birds so it will be expensive but i guess i'll buy my meat off them.
And its right up the road from me.
