Hi! My husband and I and our daughter (1 year old) have been talking about getting chickens for a while now- when we bought the house, our property is actually assessed as having a chicken coop on site although we didn't see one anywhere.
We started work on our coop over the weekend and picked up 8 chicks last night. We have 5 sex link "red" pullets and 3 "straight-line" RIR (hoping for 1 roo, 2 pullets there, but you get what you get). I'm using quotes for the terms I'm still not 100% sure of. They're currently residing in a tarp and wood shaving lined bathtub, covered with screens and a heatlamp.

This site's been a godsend so far in helping us clarify what we're looking for and how to make it happen. We got a lot of ideas from the coop designs page and I've enjoyed the forums so far when I get links back to them on google searchs of new questions as they arise. We're hoping for some eggs in addition to all natural pest control and fertilizer. Wish us luck!

Welcome! There's a lot of chicken people in CT and we have get togethers at various BYC member's homes. Look under CT chicken stock, summer 2009 for the next one.
