I bought a heating element online from China for a few bucks and had the rest of the old incubator. The heating element stinks. I mean really stinks like burnt oil. I hope that will go away after awhile. I had to hook up a fan from another incubator, a thermostat from another one and finally they all made it to my first incubator. Oh it's confusing. So far she reads 37.5 so I must be doing something right. I had to strip wires and hot glue the bare wires. I know what bare wires do when they touch. Been there done that once. It would not be so bad but my eggs will be here in the next day or so. You can see the heating element in front of the fan. It works very good. I laugh at my antics. Whatever works. I might put the incubator on some bricks....just in case.

Very resourceful. Your experience with a product produced in China mirrors my own. I often have to re-engineer a product and make alterations just to get the thing to work. It seems Chinese manufacturers are presented by an American company with plans and specs and told to produce it as cheaply as possible. Then the Chinese company further cuts corners and substitutes inferior materials to increase their profit. What we American consumers get is a product that barely works and often ends up in the landfill in just a few months of purchasing it. What a great system.

The good thing is it's super cheap and I probably will not use it again. I know it's a bad thing but being poor...what does a person do.

That stink you are smelling is probably the residual oils from manufacturing burning off the heating element. I did something similar with to pieces of Chinese made crap but I used the incubator guts from an American company (Incubator Wearhouse) you can see the link to my build in my signature. Its the Franken-bator link.
