Hello everyone! I'm new here, but not new to chickens. I have had backyard chickens (small scale 6-24) on and off for almost 15 years now. We recently decided to keep chickens again. We have 14 straight run heavy layers. Not *exactly* sure what we have yet, but it looks like a couple of Speckled Sussex, barred rocks, a wyandotte, an austrolorp, and maybe, just maaaaaybe a Welsummer or 3? We have some kind of buff bird-orpington or rock. Not sure yet. We had 18 but our little 10 lbs terrier made quick work of 4 of them. I underestimated his prey-drive and through a series of ill timing and very unfortunate events he made it into the coop even with two of us standing there. I am also trying my hand at turkeys this year. So far, not so good, but I will save those questions for another post. :)

Please keep your dog and chickens totally apart. Dogs + chickens = dead chickens. You never hear about a chicken killing a dog . Yorkies, Chihuahuas, doxies though very small usually do the most damage.

x2 with Diva - you have to introduce dogs to the chooks by putting them on the lead and rewarding them for NOT CHASING THEM. It takes patience. I found with my big boys that once they had sniffed and realised that they were not a threat and that I don't fuss the chooks too much whilst the dogs are around - they leave them alone. Just like when you have cats, you must train your dog from an early age that cats are not to be chased or hurt.
