My Journey Dealing with the Non-Native Red Foxes in California

I think boxes of .22 caliber rounds state that the range is 1 mile. Large centerfire rounds can go 3 or 4 miles. Maximum travel of shotgun pellets is around a couple hundred yards depending on shot size.

Red Foxes are native to pretty much all of North America. I live in a grey part of this map and also have to deal with red foxes. I assume they walked here from 10 miles away where they're "native". Fortunately they're unable to catch my chickens, but they definitely are annoying

3 miles for high powered rifles and 1 mile for a .22.

How to trap a fox

Using a cage trap can make trapping a fox difficult. I put a leg hold trap in the spot where the fox was going under the fence and had success quickly both times I had a fox problem.

Snares are also very effective.
