My lab needs a friend. help me pick.

It's important to remember with any hound that a well-fenced yard is a necessity, as is keeping them on leash when out and about unless in a fenced area. They are wanderers and have 'selective hearing', and do not respect invisible fences. A loose hound is often a dead hound.

I have look into both of them. The swiss seem to have a lot of health problems and the ridge backs i never found a breeder i liked.

We have thought about a german short hair pointer.

How about a Husky?

They normally come in "rich" colors (silver/gray, black, red, white) and their [blue] eyes really stand out... everyone notices a husky... plus they are a working dog - used in tracking, search and rescue, and pulling... pretty high energy = good playmate... and they adjust well to all kinds of temperature...

I know if not properly socialized they tend to be more solitary... so it might be better to get one as a puppy

I don't have a husky...my favorite breed is the German Shepherd and GSDs are very good in all the things you are looking to train in (plus more)...

What about going to a shelter and adopt? You can find many bully breeds and many other mixes that are very "loud" and interesting looking...

Im not worried about it being "loud". I would like to stick with purebreeds so i can compete with them. If we go to a shelter i will be looking for one. There are a lot dump in my area. I can get a listing number for one if it has no papers. Im gonna hit the area shelters hard in the spring.

I second the Rottie suggestion! But I also think a standard Poodle would be a good pick for you! They are highly trainable, lots of energy...Just make sure you thoroughly check out the breeder unless you're interested in adopting from a breed specific rescue.

I had a labadoodle. I had to put her down two months ago. Broke my heart. Would it be possible to find a rottie with out its tail docked? My DH is against docking and cropping and refuses to buy a dog that has it done.

i suppose if you contacted a breeder to make arrangments before hand and prepaid and stuff to gurantee you were going to take it. they do the tails within the first three days. so you wouldn't be able to change your mind.
i understand thinking it is cruel or wrong to cut there tails. but i love the fact my bella can't clear the coffee table off.
