I am a first time bird owner and this year I got 3 chickens and 2 ducks for my yard. The chickens are fine but the ducks had a niacin deficiency when they were young. While I did up the niacin in their diet, one never fully recovered. She's been able to stand and get around, but recently she seems to have injured her leg and can't even stand up. The injured leg doesn't seem to be broken but it is swollen and it just kind of sticks out to the side. She can move it but as I said before, she can no longer stand or walk. Is this hopeless? I am devastated. Is there anything I can do?

Welcome to BackYard Chickens.

Could you take a video of her walking, upload it to a video platform like Youtube or Vimeo, and copy/paste the link here?

What is she being fed, how old is she, how did you get the niacin up in her diet?

No I don't have a video of her walking and she no longer can. I used brewers yeast and it helped the one but not the other. She is a Pekin duck and is approximately 21 weeks. Even though her legs weren't right she still got around fairly well without using her beak or wings most of the time. She is being fed purina duck pellets but both of the ducks eat the chicken food as well. I attached a picture of how she lays and how her leg sticks out. I've been having her in a baby pool several times a day as well and there doesn't seem to be much improvement.

When was the last time you saw her up and walking?
It's been about 4 days. I noticed she hadn't moved at all from where I set her one morning and that's when I noticed her swollen leg. I can't feel anything like a break and there are no cuts or scraps either

I would suggest taking her to a vet, because the treatment you'll be able to provide at home will likely only prove a poor prognosis for her, sadly. Just my take on this.

My 3 day old blue swedish/cayuga is doing the same thing, and I'm getting a little worried... If you do end up taking her to the vet I'd love to know the outcome
