hello, my family is thinking about getting chickens! We have a plan to attach a gate to an enclosed outside area that will be open to the chickens full time. If you open the gate it will allow the chickens to rome around our lawn. My mom is afraid that the chickens might ruin the grass, though. Do you think it will?

Also behind our lawn is a field where dogs sometimes walk. Do think that the dogs will scare the chickens?

And lastly I thought it would be a good idea to only let the chickens in the lawn when we are home. Is this un-nessasary? THANX

Chickens will probably ruin your lawn they like to dig and scratch. They will need protection from dogs (cats, raccoons, fox, etc. etc.) - dogs like to chase them like toys and end up killing alot of them. It's usually better to have an enclosed run for them, unless someone is with them when they are loose in the yard.

Chickens will scratch, and dig at the grass looking for grubs and little tasty treats. So depending on the size of your flock and the size of your yard they could very well leave you with no grass. Dogs can be a big problem when it comes to chickens especially if they are not your dogs and are not used to being around the chickens and vice versa. And for your last question chickens are, of course, birds. You should always assume that unless precautions are taken that they will try to fly out of their enclosure. That being said some breeds are more likely to be "flighty" than others. Chickens are wonderful animals, not only can they provide you with an abundance of food, they can also make great pet's and be very affectionate. As long as you do very good research on the breed you would like to get and the area you plan house them in I would say you should be fine. You are already on the right track by asking the questions before you get the birds.

Happy chickening, Ryan.

If your birds are allowed out of their coop and run only for recreation when someone is home, they are unlikely to decimate a lawn. Is your yard completely fenced in? If not then I can see the dogs as being a danger to your birds.
