Actually, it's only the east coast of Florida that is under a Hurricane warning (which is issued 36 hours before hurricane conditions are expected, to allow time for preparations to be completed). A hurricane watch has been issued for the coast of Georgia and most of South Carolina (a watch means hurricane conditions are possible, and is issued 48 hours before the onset is considered at all likely). Several of our local beach communities have already declared states of emergency, but that also has more to do with preparations than actual expectations regarding imminent damage.
Forecasters keep saying that this is a big storm, so whether the eye touches the coast or not, tropical weather conditions can be expected at the coast and possibly well inland.
