My leukemia's back.

Are you ready for your "grin of the day"? We had the chickens out for awhile today while it was so nice outside. Jen had just come to pick up Kendra, so Grampa brought a chicken up to the deck for her to see. Sweet Little Bumblebee....even sweeter little Kendra giggles!

Howdy friends with the exception of Rachel losing her poor bird. Seems like it wasn't too bad of a day....I was really busy today running around in town. I love snow...at least for a while.glad winter is going the way it is.the milder temps and less snow make it easier to get through.

Well, ironically I ended up losing a chicken today too. Dear, sweet Ida, my first hen to lay, had to be culled and I'm sick about it. Oh, I suppose I could have gone to superhuman lengths to save her, but all that would have done was prolong her suffering and and she deserved much better than that. As soon as I figured out we were dealing with egg yolk peritonitis, the decision was easy. The doing, however, was not. I hate this part of chicken-keeping.

:hugs. Me too, even when your brain knows you are doing the right thing, your heart still hurts a bit.

Blooie, you have my deepest sympathy. I had to cull 3 or 4 this summer. And it was hard to do. Even more so, in knowing that their death was in vain. They were buried, instead of making it to a final resting place of the stew pot. Somehow, it's easier, knowing that their death will provide sustenance for an other day.

Thanks, guys. I'm okay, really. Just a bit of a shock at first. I kinda expected something sooner or later with her. She persisted in laying eggs that were absolutely huge, and she wasn't a very big girl. I got one from here that was over 120 grams! No kidding! She is the second Red Sex Link I've lost to reproductive issues. Beatrice was always laying rubber eggs. She finally settled into more normal eggs, and while a rubber egg from a pullet now and again is no big deal, she just continued way past pullet age. Now Ida, with her giant eggs, has also been lost for the same kind of problems. I'd heard that that can be an issue, especially with hatchery birds. I just didn't expect to lose two of the same age to the same kind of thing.

It happens. It's part of raising chickens. I feel like LG does - if you are culling and the birds are providing meat for your family, that's one thing. But to have to cull a good layer because, well, because she's a good layer, that just seems backwards.

Blooie that baby with bumblebee was adorable. kids who learn to love animals are more considerate adults too. sorry for ya'lls chicken loses. why is it you can have 50 animals and the one you are partial too kicks the bucket. I lost a new born lamb today. what's the deal with today. bad for us animal lovers.
