My leukemia's back.

I hear you on the teenagers.

Wa-a-a-y back just after my daughter was born, I remember one of the nurses commenting on how sweet it was when DH and DS came to visit with us. Glad as I was to see them, two slightly hyperactive males (one 40 years old, the other 4) with nothing to do were only tolerable in relatively small doses.

DH is still the sort that can develop cabin fever in a thunderstorm.

Good morning donrae! Nice deal you worked out with the nurses so you can get some sleep at night. I hope you have a good day.

Rachel...

You are awe inspiring!

I am still praying for you and your wonderful family throughout this time...I pray now especially for a suitable bone marrow donor for you to get back to full health and back home into the loving arms of your family! Would love to see you post a picture of yourself at Christmas with the family AT HOME!

Thanks for keeping us all updated with your progress....it means a great deal to everyone that cares and loves you!

Suzie and one very mucky Silkie " Marmie"....

My husband had the privledge of being a marrow donor a few years back. I'm pregnant right now and we plan to donate our baby's cord blood also (something I think everyone should do!). I'm a huge advocate of donation. I hope they find the perfect match for you!

That should be something discussed with everyone before childbirth.
Painless and by all other standards, a waste product.

How long did it take your husband to recover from the extraction?

Hug your honey for me! And yourself on the cord blood. They say since I'm a white chick, I have a good chance of finding an unrelated donor. There was an Asian lady on my floor recently that said her best chance was going to be cord blood because there aren't near as many Asians on the registry. One of those things you just don't think of.......my kiddos were a long time ago, but I was never approached about donating cord blood. Would have in a heartbeat! I mean, honestly, why on earth not? Not like you're going to save it for anything

Did he just do the stem cell, or the actual marrow? My understanding is they hardly ever to the actual marrow anymore, it's just a large bore IV and the cells are filtered, so there shouldn't be much recovery time as they replace everything.

He did stem cells. Many people don't realize that these days over 75% of donations are done through apheresis (like dontaing plateletes or plasma), not surgically like you see in movies and most people think of. Mainly the traditional marrow is done for children because for whatever reason they do better with marrow. My husband was feeling fine and back to his normal self the day after donation. Nothing anyone should be scared of registering for and you get to have the chance to potentially save a life!

To me it's such a shame that Ob's and doctors aren't brinign up cord blood to all of their patients. Everyone should be given the option to dontae. I think most people have no idea it's something they can do and the cord blood is simply discarded as medical waste. I only knew about it because I work in the field, so I brought it up to my doctor. As you said, it's like, do I want to throw this away or do I want to donate it and maybe save someone's life? Easy choice!

My beloved grandson was killed in a car accident 2 years ago. He was 22 and had only been married for a few months. He used to grow his gorgeous dark hair out and donate to Locks of Love when he was younger so it was no surprise that he had checked the organ donor box on his license. We lost our Austin but he lives on in so many people who had waited on transplant lists for far too long. His only physical injury was to his head, so they were able to use everything from corneas to skin, internal organs to bones. I miss him every day but I'm so proud of his selflessness, especially now that my sister has been the kidney transplant list for so long. Bless all who are donors and those who wait.
