I've never heard of Wolf Rivers before. Isn't it amazing the variety of apples around now?

I was grumbling to DH the other day about having to take the little scanner labels off each apple. Years ago I worked at a grocery store and there weren't labels on apples, you were expected to know the variety and ring them up accordingly. Yeah, I was grinching like an old crabapple, lol. DH had to remind me "back in the day" I worked at a grocery store there were maybe 3 varieties for sale (Jonathan, Red and Yellow Delicious), now there are probably a dozen with organic apples adding to that count.

I hate it when he has to point out the obvious to me, doh!

Wolf River is an old time variety. VERY OLD. My neighbors had a tree. One apple was just about big enough to make a pie. These ones were big, but not quite that big! Still, super easy to process b/c of the size.

Forgot to add...I've asked at a couple of grocery stores around here about their old produce (and even old yogurt). They say they can't give it away or sell it, it's against the health laws or something silly like that. Even when I've explained it's for farm animals, they say they can't.

What a waste when you consider all the food, fit for humans and/or animals, that's trashed.

My cousin lives in Wauwatosa...Wisconsin...her and her Husband started up a foodbank some years ago...her Husband used to work for a bakery and knew of the huge waste...when he retired through ill health he approached the bakery in Milwaukee...they agreed to give him bread and cakes that were just past their sell by date...he purchased a van and distributed food to needy folks...the charitable act grew and it is now a huge voluntary organisation...non profit making and I am so very proud of them...

If anyone in that area wants further details to contribute to the cause...just pm me and I will pass on details...

The only issue with straw is wet straw is more likely to grow mold.

I think it was the moderator Wynette that posted about crop issues actually being digestion issues, usually caused by worm load. She said treating the crop problem alone will not solve the digestion issues. If there is an impacted crop, worm them and give them pro biotics.

I have heard that straw can harbour mites ( as it is hollow )..I gave up using straw two years ago...hay is my choice as it serves as good bedding, nest box material and my rabbits eat it...hay is free as it is harvested from the land here. Smells great too....!

Thank you, I too heard that! I passed up the straw today when I ordered feed, they hadnt a single bale of hay

so I ordered shavings again. I will have to find a few bales local. just to see what they do with it and keep treatment on hand just in case, and know to watch for crop issues. But I think its worth a try!
