I have a similar mounting system for roosts. I can add oil in two cups on both sides to prevent a red mites infestation.
It blocks the route to the chickens.

I'm confused.
You put oil in the square part and that's at both ends of the roost. That stops the mites from getting on the roost to the chickens.
What kind of oil? Special mite oil, or?

Yep so red mites live in the coop not on the chicken. The cup holds any sort of oil to trap the mites as they try get to the chickens (detergent also works)
