I wanted to share the little chick that was a result of my Lavender Orp Roo and EE hen with Lavender Plumage. I ADORE her eggs, they are the most beautiful baby blue and I was very shocked to see a little Lavender colored baby. Does that mean she was carrying the Lav gene? I'm not sure how this works exactly. The other chicks were black not surprisingly and then one brown/red which I assume was my LO/Buff O cross chick. I didn't hatch these myself but I'm looking to experiment more in the future to see what comes of them. They are just so cute!

Lavender is a recessive gene and requires 2 copies for the bird to show the coloring. The fact that your Easter Egger hen has lavender coloring means she has 2 copies of the gene. The chick has 2 copies as it got one from dad and one from mom.

Thank you! I was thinking that was the case but since she isn't all Lavender it was just a guessing game as to if the chick would have the color as well. Another one is being incubated right now so I'm interested to see if it also will show Lav. The chicks should lay blue/green eggs right?

They will only lay green eggs if the mother has 2 copies of the blue egg gene. If she has only 1 copy of the blue egg gene half will get it and half won’t.

Can I ask is it just me or is the back of ur roosters comb black
They look stunning btw

Yes it does appear that way. I was very concerned about foul pox when I first noticed it but he is the only one with it and doesn't seem to be affected. Here is a bit closer picture. Should I be treating it?
