My luck finally ran out (WARNING: Graphic pictures)

That's a hawk. I've seen that before. Maybe an owl but I don't think so. Around here, owls try to move prey. However hawks ate them right there.

Thank you everyone for your input and condolences.

After consideration I have to agree that the predator is a bird of prey, and right as I type this there is visible proof.

My brother and father spotted a very large bird (Dad says five foot wingspan) circling over the place, and I saw it with binoculars. It's very high up, but I can tell it's the largest bird I've seen around here. I want to say golden eagle, but I'm not 100% sure as even with binoculars it's hard to see.

So it's a very good thing that I'm keeping the chickens locked up.

I'll be looking into all potential non-lethal deterrents.

I would think either skunk or raptor. So sorry for the loss of your hen!

I am sorry about your loss, too. I'm sure it is very sad to see. I did want to add that I have a chicken named "Crooked-Toe" too. Best chicken I've got. She's a EE with a toe that is completely bent sideways.

We also have been lucky thus far but it is probably just a matter of time.

Check your local laws regarding pellet guns/non lethal measures on animals to "scare them" off. I know stateside it is illegal to shoot animals with anything less than a gun, even if it seems like a better option because you don't want to kill them or even permanently harm them. I would advise following your local laws and if you decide not to, don't post it online!

Some police use paintball guns and pepper balls but I don't think civilians can use that, not here in the United States anyhow. I imagine Canada is even more strict judging by firearm laws in the respective countries.

We should never "resign" ourselves that predator attacks are inevitable. It does not have to happen if you take the right precautions it can be avoided. Certainly it does happen but it doesn't have to.

However I am sorry for your loss.
