Somewhere out there in Illinois
So I have a lil problem with my RIR. She has been hand raised. Always around people, kids , other animals. She has seem to become very mean. She charges and attacks when you enter the run. She also follows you around and if you are still for to long she attacks by jumping on you and pecking you hard. She don't like when I hold my Buff, and she does not like to be ignored. I don't understand why she got like this so any help as to how I can change her mood would be great. I have been putting sage n lavender in the nesting boxes to try and sooth her, also spending time with her holding her and bringing her healthy treats. I'm failing at this in a bad way. Love her to death and she lays great. But man is she mean. Can anyone give me suggestions? Thank so much
 
I have a RIR that's mean, not as mean as yours. I was cleaning the poop board and she jumped up on the roost board and pecked me right on top of my head. She'll also get you good if you try to take eggs out from under her. When I clean the coop she always lets me know it's her house by getting in my way.
 
Chicken folks like to say the meanest birds make the best soup. I don't know why she suddenly turned on you but, I doubt anything will change her attitude. Have you tried protecting yourself from her attacks? Like spraying her from a water bottle , or keeping a broom between you and her. Even opening an umbrella when she charges would probably take the starch out of her attack.

Drumstick diva has given you some good ideas on how to make her less willing to attack. If the spray bottle doesn't work, there's no reason to keep a mean chicken because there are so many nice ones out there.

I have not tried the water bottle. I will definitely try that. I have tried rocks in a can and shaking it and throwing food in so to distract her. Shes just got this issue IDK.... But thank you for helping me. I will keep you posted on how it works. If all else fails I will see if someone will take her , or soup soup sounds good hahahaha.....
