I thought I'd take a moment to say thank you for all of the wonderful advice that I have received on this awesome site.
1. I had my nest boxes higher than the roosts, so I clean out poo everyday from them. My solution is to build new nesting boxes coming out of the back wall so I don't have to go inside to collect eggs. This will also give me more space since I will be removing 9 boxes. My only question about this is how high do I put the nesting boxes off the ground?
2. Electrolytes - I never knew any thing about the health benefits of using them. Now I give to my girls when I think they need a boost.
3. Corid - the stuff u can buy at tractor supply when a chic has watery poo. Hope I spelled it right. I lost a chicken recently to this.
4. Seven dusting powder, learned how to use it in their dust baths to prevent fleas and ticks. As well as using some wood ash too.
5. Water water water, chickens must have water to lay eggs. Now their dish is never dry.
6. Coop circulation - moisture can freeze your chickens waddles and combs. Vasoline rubbed on waddles and combs helps prevent freezing.
7. No need to heat coop. I didn't until this cold snap of 46 below zero for 3 days. My girls are tough but I gave them a bit of heat just in case.
8. Chickens are garbage disposals and excellent composers.
9. My two roosters could live together in harmony, and they do.
Some of these items may seem like common sense to all of you seasoned chicken owners but when I first started out there were so many things I didn't know, I still have much to learn. So for all of you who have taken the time to advise a beginner I thank you. I will continue to ask obvious or idiotic questions from time to time because if you don't ask you will never know. Again thank you.
