I have wanted chickens ever since I moved off the grid and into the bush last year and now have lots : ) I have been an avid visitor to backyard chickens and finally decided to sign up.

My flock;

My first batch were year olds 3 WCB Polish hens , and Silver Laced Polished pair. That was 3 months ago.
I lost my SLP hen a month ago when my puppy chased her deep into the bush.

I have since gotten 5 New Hampshire, 2 EE , 1 BR, 2 Cornish, and 1 Australorp. 4-6 wks old

And my darling Houdan WCB polish cross poulet

Adding a slate and bourbon poult last week. my first attempt of 2 died within 2 days of getting them home, they escaped from my brooder and into my dogs mouth. Lesson learnt they now live under lock and key.

With one coop finished and a second nearing completion I feel coop construction will become never ending with my new found addiction.

Love the forums and all the members. Glad to finally be an official member.

You're off grid?! You lucky.... I'm getting a couple bourbon red poults next week. It will be a challenge moving our chicken coop to our new location.. kinda wish we waited like you, but didn't aspire to live off grid until after the chickens. I was looking at this website for research for about a year before I purchased chicks and then signed up here the day I purchased my chicks. It's addicting! Is there any way you can train the pup to not attack the birds? When we rescued our 2nd dog he caught my leghorn when she escaped the run. she was injured pretty bad, but I was able to rehabilitate her. Ever since then, I haven't had a problem with him, they protect our chickens. My 1st rescue dog will help me herd them and if I need to catch one she assists me. It wasn't too hard to train both of them (but I guess it all just depends on the dog). Again, Welcome! :)

Hello

Going off grid was/is a challenge and a lot of work. I started with rabbits first because they are "easier" now chickens and turkeys. I live on the same property as my aunt and she breeds Border Collies she has 20 of them. I personally only have one puppy I am trying to train him to herd them and I think that was what he was doing I doubt he killed it but I imagine he got distracted and lost track o the chicken in the bush. All the dogs seem good with the chickens , rabbits on the other hand a different story. I grew up in the city and I have a lot to learn I find this this site very informative. I defiantly going off grid it is extremely liberating : ) and peacefull!
