so i used to have one of these with a metal feed pan instead of the rubber one, but the chickens would scratch all the feed out, so i found this idea by @Pyxis she used a rubber feed pan instead of the wider metal one, such a good idea! thank you! i am not going to do an article on this because @Pyxis already has a great one, i Highly recommend this easy cheap DIY feeder, it is way larger and more durable then those expensive store bought ones that fall apart easily. if you would like to build this(you should) the link is here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/articles/quick-and-easy-30-pound-feeder.71790/

how do you keep birds off lid?

If you want to keep them off, I have in the past easily found a funnel on Amazon that has almost the same diameter as a 5 gallon bucket. Just wire/glue/place it on the top and you have a cheap cone that will not allow roosting. Google "10 inch funnel". 10 inches is less than a 5 gallon bucket diameter, but only by about an inch to inch and a half. There are very few cheap 11 or 12 inch funnels, so the trick is to just use a 10 inch.
