Soo, I just bought a new chicken, and I've had her for three days now and I'm a little worried. Second day I noticed some clear snotty stuff on her nostril and had to peel off some straw and grass that was stuck to her. Third day (being today) I noticed her sneezing, and breathing with her beak open a bit.

1) What type of bird , age and weight. EE, approx 5months, looks healthy weight
2) What is the behavior, exactly. Sneezes and gunky nose. She isnt very active but she is NOISY if she gets worried about anything
3) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma. nope
4) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation. Only had her 3 days.
5) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all. Mostly layer pellets, a few carrot peels and cucumber peels. Also a bit of fruit salad, but this started as soon as I got her.
6) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc. Most of it looks normal, but I saw one that looked, frothy, and really light brown.
7) What has been the treatment you have administered so far? I've worried and kept her away from my original babies
8 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet? I'd like to know what she's got, whether shes going to be dangerous to my new birds. If so I'll be taking her to a vet, and if you turns out to be sick, I'll be taking her back/getting my money back
9) If you have a picture of the wound or condition, please post it. It may help. Nope
10) Describe the housing/bedding in use Temporary tractor, Bit of pea straw and newspaper in one end and dirt in the other. (which are spreading around alot)

You're doing the right thing by keeping her separated. If she has a respiratory illness, which is sure sounds like she does, she'll be contagious to the others. You should ALWAYS separate new ones for a minimum of 30 days to make sure they are not carrying illness that could be transferred to existing stock.

If it were me, I would return her and get my money back. Many respiratory illness...I'd say MOST of them...are highly contagious and difficult to contain. For this reason, I would not recommend getting another bird from the seller.

There's no way to know what your girl has for sure unless you take her to an Avian vet.

If you decide to keep her, make sure she gets good nutrition and hydration...that's key. However, it doens't sound you're too awfully attached to her, and are willing to return her. I think if you decide to keep her, you're in for a long haul in recovering her, unfortuantley.

BEST of luck with her!

Personally I would return the chicken. I am currently going through this. I brought new chickens home and after just a week put them in with my flock. Now many have died from a respitory disease. It is very sad. We have been treating the survivors for weeks now. Now we have given them shots of tylan and they are doing better, but it is sad that I have lost so many of my special chickens just cause I wanted the new chickens to move in with my flock.

well shes going to the vet tonight. Once I find out what it is I'll know what to do. Looks like shes going back though.

Feeling dumb right now, I should have looked a little closer before I bought her

The property looked pretty and all the birds I saw looked healthy and cheerful, but when I got her home and looked closely she looked grubby

If it's not something she'll be a life carrier of I think I'll keep her, give her a nice home. Even so, dont think I'll buy from that lady again

She may have infected your chickens already. They might be in the incubation stage right now. Upper respiratory infections spread like wild fire. When you bring her to the vet ask about Tylan. It is water soluable and my vet highly recommended it for my chickens when they came down with CRD. She is a certified avian vet.

If I am not mistaken the chickens who have it will always be carriers but I could be wrong.

Good luck. I'm so happy that you want to offer her a good home. Let us know what happens. Feedback is one of the only ways we learn about the crazy wonderful world of chickens.

ask Purple Chicken. He has a powerful video that he made on YouTube about something similar. so sad... Very brave of him to make the video!

Purple chickens vid is what convinced me not to take any chances. Glad I did.

She either has a highly contagious respitory infection, avian flu or coccidos (i think thats what he said.. might have be coggi something..)

I paid 15 for an antibiotic and a $50 consult fee

not cool.

Called the lady n left her a message saying I dont want a sicky and that I want my money back (even mentioned the vet fee).

Hope she calls back because she hasnt been very consistent. I'll keep calling. What kind of person sells a sick chicken. Gah

And purpletree23, I had her seperate from the others, about 20metres apart (entire distance of my backyard).

The only go between has been my dog, and she doesnt like the chickens that much, so we should be okay. *fingers crossed*
