My 6 barred rock chicks are thriving growing and doing well! So well at 2 weeks and 2 days old they have learned how to escape the brooder box that's 2.5' tall!. My question is I have researches all I can on how to sex these chicks. They are all barred rocks. I ordered 4 females from the hatchery and received 6. My understanding from hatchery is they send extra to cover shipping loss but others send males to keep heat up during shipping. By head spot I would say could go either way on all my chicks, by leg color all legs are dark but two have very dark legs and lighter feet. A couple birds have become very obviously dominant in the flock. They are the biggest and most daring of the flock. Could that be a sex factor? Does dark legs and light feet mean cockerel? Any help is much appreciated if you want pictures I will add them!

The sex will become pretty obvious as your chicks feather out. Barred Rock males have a lot more white on them. It will be pretty obvious from the pictures I've seen. Also, by about 8 weeks old the males will have larger and redder combs. Girls will have their flesh colored combs at that age. Hope this helps. I'm not an expert by far. Have just done a lot of reading around the forums and from my own limited experience having chickens for 4 years.
