Welcome! You mention societal goings-on, and I feel you. My backyard (specifically tending to my 8 ladies) is about the only place I can relax and lose track of the outside world. It's a beautiful, therapeutic thing. You'll love 'em.

Hi, my name is Sue McNary-Murray. My 1st new baby chicks arrived on the morning of June 19, 2020. It's an exciting and new adventure that I have been wanting to do for about 10 years+. The day finally arrived. I had been doing research and learning about chickens, their needs, how to care for them, what I needed to get started, and what breeds that I wanted. First things first, I wanted dual purpose, prolific brown egg layers, docile and friendly personality, cold hearty as I live in Northeastern Ohio to mention a few. I ended up with 3 Black Australorps, 3 Partridge Rocks, 3 Rhode Island Reds and freebie rare breed which appears to be a Speckled Sussex (not sure if a roo or a hen) from Murray McMurray Hatchery. It's been very exciting as I remember my grandmothers chickens on the farm when I was very young. My grandparents raised black face sheep mainly on the farm. I believe this becoming more necessary as society changes around us and my desire to be self sufficient, loving chickens, loving farm life, and all things country were my main motivating factors to finally jump in and go for it.

Here's to hoping your mystery chick IS a Speckled Sussex! I have one, and she is the sweetest girl and seems to really enjoy being petted and talked to. Bronwyn likes to know what I'm doing when I'm working in the yard and often tries to "help" -- especially if I am moving rocks or boards that may hide edible creepy crawlies.

This is Ginger my suspected Speckled Sussex. Strongly suspect that Ginger is Fred. Perhaps a Roo ??? May I ask your opinion? She/He will be 6 weeks on Wednesday 7/29/20. Any help would be appreciated.

They all appear to be pullets to me, usually by 6 weeks, cockerels are starting to develop big ol combs and wattles. I say girls!

Thank you for answering me and your opinion. I am thinking that she is a Wellsummer and not a speckled Sussex. She has a larger comb compared to the rest of the girls. The other hens tend to follow her which is cute. Ginger and one of my partridge rocks are the primary sitters on the roosting bar in the pen. I will attempt to get a closer picture of her and send it to you.
