Yeah, by the time I'm finished with them, Donald Trump himself will be jealous.

NOT!!!! They'll probably look almost the same, just a bit cleaner...

Ohhh, this just gets better. Started cleaning one of them out this evening, and what did I find under all the piles of old poo and feathers? Two giant home made pipe-type hanging feeders, a full aerosol can of terramycin spray, a nearly new top quality shovel, a whole pile of plastic storage buckets in varying sizes, all with lids, a couple of plastic chick drinkers and the cutest ever little chick sized trough feeder, complete with little wire mesh cover to prevent wastage. I'm going to disinfect it and put it in with my chicks tomorrow.

Don't worry, I've got the scrubbing programme well planned out. I've already shovelled most of the old poop out. Next I'm going to pressure steam clean them with our super-duper boiling hot pressure washer. Then I'm going to slosh a ton of bleach round them and give them a good hand scrubbing. I'm going to let the bleach go to work for a day or two. Then I'm going to pressure steam them again. I'm going to strip out any rotten wood once they're clean, then leave them for a couple of weeks to dry out. Then I'm going to repair them and finally spray them with Citral for red mite (just in case). I think that should be good enough.

My boyfriend actually knows the farmer I bought them from quite well, and he's a very clean and conscientious kind of person. Anyone I've asked says his birds and beasts are always in good condition and well looked after, so I'm sure that while the coops are filthy, they're not harbouring any horrors. But thanks for the advice!

Does your steam/pressure cleaner have a tank for "soap"? If it does you could put bleach in there and save yourself a step. Just a thought, cuz it seems like you have your work cut out for yoursellf.

That's a great idea, and it DOES have a hose that you drop into an open drum of soap/disinfectant/whatever. But I'm going to be standing inside these coops while I'm jetwashing, and I don't fancy being soaked in bleach steam. Bleach makes my skin itch really badly. And it's going to be bad enough being splattered with little bits of red hot chicken poop, which I just KNOW is going to happen a lot. You should see the state of me when I jetwash the shed our cows have been in for the winter. Even with waterproofs, goggles and a big hood, I still end up disgustingly poopy.

Those are awesome!! Nice find. I don't envy you on getting poopy though.......

Best of luck with your project!

Boy, that is amajor undertaking but I bet the results will be well worth it. Too bad you can't get ahold of a HAZMAT suit to protect you better from flying poo. I don't envy that task. I have to subscribe to this thread. Can't wait to see and hear about your adventures. How nice to get some bonuses out of the deal. I wouldn't mind the shovel myself.
