My new flock

Just showing off my new chicks (all girls)....maybe you all could help me name a few of them while you're at it. Fluffybutt #1, Fluffybutt #2.....or Teresa, spawn of Mephistopheles, chicken of doom. I'm just terrible with this sort of thing.

#1: She's actually both of our favorites (don't tell the others). She is completely black with a white patch on her throat. She came out of the Australorp bin so we're pretty sure she is pure. A very tame and adventurous chicken and she seems to be in charge of the flock so far.

#2: She is actually our largest chick and the biggest wimp of the bunch. She has a lot of separation anxiety when taken from the others. She's another Australorp.

#3: The larger of the two Silver Wyandotte chicks. She has black and white coloration. She is less timid than the other and has a good eye for bugs and potential food items.

#4: She is our smallest chick. Another Silver Wyandotte. She has some brown coloration mixed with black and white. She is a bit timid, probably because of her size, but like her sister has a good eye for bugs and loses her timidity when food is involved. Maybe it's a Wyandotte thing hmm?

Well good news. We found some Buff Orpington chicks for sale and bought one to add to our flock.

She is very friendly and I think that is the really the maximum our new coop can handle without getting crowded. She is the smallest chick and was getting picked on a bit when she first entered "the tub", but everybody seems to be getting along now. We seem to have 3 extremely friendly chicks (One Australorp, One Silver Wyandotte, and the Orpington) and two scaredy chickens (biggest Australorp and the smallest Wyandotte). We are having a bit of anxiety about a possible rooster appearance from our apparent "pure pullet" purchases. We are hopeful that our favorites are just great hens.

Expect some new pics sometime soon and probably a post in the what sex is it thread.

I named my SLW "Lacey," but upon reflection, I think SOMEBODY should name they Wyandotte "Tammy."

congrats on the new babies! They are gorgeous! Your names are great too! I love naming my chickens, thats one of the most exiting parts (aside from getting them, holding them, feeding them, letting them outside for the first time, teaching them their names, gathering the first eggs, OH stop me. Im such a chicken addict) I like the names thelma or penelope or cinnamon or weasel but thats only if your a big nerd like me

Yeah they're pretty entertaining

. We've had a few good games of keep away with worms and pieces of scrambled eggs. The little ones seem just as capable as the larger chicks. What I find amazing is the all black Australorp isn't as interested in new food items as the others. She'd much rather get attention.

Some of our chicks are great manicurists. They can spot the tiniest little bit of skin on your hand and will work till they pull it off. I wonder if this is a chicken thing or are ours "special". Oh and they'll go for moles too. I'm a nurse and my first thought was....omg we could start "The Backyard Chicken Skin Cancer Clinic".

Ok, its actually an annoying feature but I did have the thought

. We are learning a lot about how these little cuties see the world. Very different from other animals we've had. We need a book on Chicken Psychology I think.

This our chicks first lengthy outdoor session. I got a ton of pictures, mainly because I wanted to get advice on what people thought the bottom black chick was (last pic). We're now thinking she's a Black Star and not an Australorp. The chicks were very timid at first but quickly forgot about all of that when they started scratching around and finding tasty bugs and shoots.

Finally got a front view of my black and white, silver wyandotte chick. She was so excited I couldn't keep her facing the camera.

She may look small but she is the absolute master of keep away in our flock. When there is something she wants, she works and runs till it's hers.

I'm amazed at how well the chicks get along.
