BTW...the way I came to learn that is because I once had a little doeling with horns just about the size or your buckling's, and she came a cat's hair of ripping one off in a fence. Found her with blood streaming down the side of her face from the backside of the horn base. The horn had pretty much come unattached, save for the skin around the front.

Man, do they bleed.

We'd been wishy-washy about disbudding her up till that point, and we already had an appointment with the vet that day for another situation with another goat (can't honestly remember why at this point), so we threw her in the vehicle and figured we'd do a two-fer.

The vet said it was no sweat, basically, and just cut/burned/removed the fledgling horn. The whole thing took a matter of minutes. When he was done, you could see skull -- but there was no hole through to the sinus cavity!! And seeing skull after disbudding really isn't that big of a deal...some folks disbud right down to the skull intentionally, even on few-day-old baby kids..

It's not necessary, of course...and can actually lead to unnecessary complications like infection, etc...but folks do it.. If any of you hear someone advising to disbud to the "white ring" and/or "pop" the center out...that's what they mean...that's straight to the skull.

Anyway...just wanted to relate that so y'all didn't think I was just pulling something out of thin air.. I've actually been there, actually done that, probably still have a bloody tee shirt somewhere to prove it.

I just had my little girl done, she is between 3-4 months old. I bought her at the auction 2 weeks ago. She had about 3/4-1 inch horns. I called and asked the vet, he said he would look at her. They dont like doing them this late down here because it does (sometimes) open the sinus cavity and its so warm down here they worry about the flies. I took her in, they put her under, took her home in a few hours and she is doing great!!! Only cost me $50 dollars!
