Howdy
csaylorchickens
I had a Silkie hen [RIP sweet Tina] who did pitch perfect peacock impressions.
I now have 2 x 5 month old Silkie X’s who sound more like ducks than chickens. They both recently laid their first egg and there was definitely cause for celebration within the whole flock
to the point that while I was out there trying to quieten them, one of the neighbours came out to check on them, concerned for their welfare and he also joined in the celebrations.
I also have a Bantam Cochin who will voice her dissatisfaction that breakfast is 2 minutes late and if it does not arrive promptly, will crow!
Dusty, a Bantam Langshan and the whinger of the flock is always complaining about something.
Complaints that “she is in my nest box” is a daily event and while we have more than one and they are vacant, they will stand next to a nest box whinging that someone else is in there and wait for them to vacate.
So, as
ChickensAreSweet mentioned, “hens are loud”
I have spoken to my neighbours about the girls and they are fine; compared to the local birdlife, crows and cockatoos, my gals are definitely not the noisiest thing in our neighbour. Throw in playful children, barking dogs and race car enthusiasts test revving engines and the chickens probably do not even rate on the annoyance scale. Two of my neighbours have mentioned they enjoy hearing the egg song. And yep, the half a dozen free eggs every so often certainly helps
We are not allowed to keep roosters and living in denial, I hung onto one of my bubs for as long as I could until he confirmed by suspicions and started to crow. He crowed for 4 mornings at 04:45am before I found him a new home and once he had gone, I mentioned this to the neighbours .. no one had heard him! I, on the other hand, had raced out as soon as I heard him, trying all ways to sush him.
So, while I do race out and check why the girls have raised the alarm and reassure/shush them, they are probably no worse than one of the neighbourhood dogs barking at a passerby and while I think they are loud, the majority of the time, the neighbours probably do not hear or notice them.
Edited to Add: I agree with
aart in that when they are new to laying, they seem to be way more excited about the process than the older hens who just go through the process
