Hello from Port Gamble, Washington.
I was the one who imported the Norwegian Jaers to this country, and I still have some of them, though I lost the "dark" variety (racoon raid). They are excellent layers of large, white eggs, but after the second year laying drops off sharply. Occasionally a hen goes broody and becomes an excellent mother.
One of the original hens hatched from the imported eggs died last fall, 14 years old! She laid a couple of eggs during the summer before last, which totally amazed me, as I have never had a chicken live that long, let alone still lay eggs.
I also keep buff, light and dark brown, white, barred, and exchequer single comb leghorns and rose comb black leghorns; catalans; marans; golden laced wyandottes; single comb black and white minorcas; and light sussex. Besides I keep a little flock of midget white turkeys and a few ducks.
Happy New Year everyone!

Why do people have to keep posting pictures of beautiful birds. As if my affliction wasn't bad enough, now here is another breed that I am going to have to look into getting. Thanks

Here are some updated pictures of them. I took my trio to a show a few weeks ago. They got Best viriety for non-standard chickens. (Not APA aproved) and one of the hens got Reserve Viriety, but it was nothing big like my Welsummer got. They beat out some other interesting birds though so I was happy.
