His comb is dark red (darker than normal) and dry looking.Good question from @Waves
Have you noticed if his comb is it's normal color or getting a bit of purple/blue tint to it?
Is he moving around o.k. even though slower, eating/drinking?
He's used to you handling/holding him right? The labored breathing is not from stress of being held.

he is moving fine. And he’s okay with me holding him (other than tainting his macho image)

I just offered him some warm oatmeal and he didn’t want it. He’s tucking his head over into his neck.
He doesn’t have any congestion but his breathing is a little labored![]()
