I know it was a jack russell terrier with a collar (possibly blue?). I called the RSPCA who transferred me to police as the council rangers were no longer working at the time. I myself had come back home from my part time job (I'm a uni student). Because I had to go over some things as I didn't do well in my exams, my mum went to feed the chicken only to find feathers scattered all over the coop.

I don't really know what to do to be honest and I also kinda want to throw up. The dog had jumped into our house (I live in the suburbs) and then after attacking the chicken, jumped out of the coop and run out, I assume it also jumped over the fence or slinked through the bars as I heard its barking decrease in volume. (Police told me to keep an eye on it but not to approach it.)

To be clear, my chicken has a little hatch thing (with a roof) which my dad recently removed the door of (to make it easier for her to move in and out). This then opened into a 'fenced off' area, more to keep her out. We never expected that such a thing would ever occur. In fact, I don't even remember ever seeing this dog around.

I'm still waiting on police to take my statement I guess because honestly there's nothing else I can do but I just feel really upset because she (my chicken, Sunshine) was one of my first pets. I had three chickens, one died while young as I was told to feed them rice only (***?!) and then the other ran off when the neighbour's fence broke... so yeah if anyone has any advice it would be really great.

Also please if anyone has any ideas for me to take my mind off this because every time I think of Sunshine I start crying... I'm just really upset because I was attached and yeah I know it was also partly my fault for not constructing a coop that would safely keep predators out but I honestly did not even have such a thought cross my mind at all. Every time I think about my chicken or anything it just really hurts, she was such a friendly chicken and when local birds like pigeons( i think) came she'd be so nice and friendly to them too and it just makes me upset thinking that she might even had been friendly to the dog or something and then it did that to her. And we had just bought two large heads of Chinese cabbage for her because it was her favourite.

I'm sorry if I'm still a bit incoherent right now.

Thanks, Amy

I am so sorry for your loss... :hugs

Even when we do all we can to protect them sometimes determined predators will still get in... do not blame yourself over this, please... domestic animals are the worst killers... I know this intimately as I just lost 31 young chickens to a vicious dog that literally tore apart a welded wire fence to slaughter them...
Wildlife predators kill for food, domestic ones massacre indiscriminately...
Think of the good life she had with you and the memories you will always cherish just having her in your life... small comfort, I know, but know you are not alone in your grief...

I'm sorry to hear that. I've always been a dog lover so I never would have thought such a thing could occur and honestly it was such a shock.

Thankfully I took photos of her and my other chickens many times so I can look over those, but it does hurt a lot thinking about her right now.

Thanks, Amy

I understand... I won't say it'll go away or get better, but with time the edges won't be as raw...

I love dogs too, but I almost shot one tonight... and she loved us... unfortunately her owners never spent time with her or trained her in any way... it is not the dogs fault, it is the owners...

I hope you get some closure on this tragedy... good luck...

Thank you for understanding.

Yeah, dogs don't have a concept of right or wrong. It's so sad that owners don't take responsibility for their dogs.

I hope so too. Thank you.
