My own dog?

Training of the dog (or rather lack of training) is usually the problem...not the dog itself.

THIS!

Every time I see someone blame the DOG for killing their chickens I have to restrain myself from pointing out that any and all dog/chicken interaction is in the hands of the human. You let them free range. You didn't train your dog. You don't have a secure fence. You don't have a secure pen. It's on YOU, not the dog.

Of course I know that she is a ground hunter. She's dropped a dead rabbit at my feet much more often than I would like. Before this, I'd never seen her go after a bird though, including the many wild geese who frequent our yard. I can't imagine that all chicken farmers don't have dogs, so I figured there has to be a way to train her.

Thanks for the helpful advice in how to work on training her. She's a sweet girl we have loved and trained (but not with chickens until now obviously) for ten years. If we have to never let the chickens and dog be in the same area, that is what we will do.
