This morning, July 25, 2025 our 5 peacock eggs hatched! The mom has been sitting on them for a month and we were not sure if they were viable or not. But this morning we found five hatched chicks in her pen. We put them in a nice warmed brooder box with food and water and wood shavings on the floor and the overhead light shining on half the box per online instructions. They all seem happily viable and are eating and drinking and hopping around. My concern is, was it wrong to separate them from their mother? She seems distressed and I feel bad for denying her the company of her new babies. He have a very large nicely accommodated pen with that she lives in. Should I release the chicks back into the pen? Or should I put the box in the pen with the heat light still on it?

Peachicks would be fine with their momma. They wouldn't need a box or a heat lamp with her. The only time I lost peachicks with their momma is when they drown in the kiddie pool.

Thanks. That's good to hear. I'm going to make the pen chick friendly today and try to get them settled back out there tomorrow. Its a big pen and we have two chickens that roost in the pen at night. During the day they all roam around our rural backyard. Would it be a good idea to keep the chicks in the pen till they get bigger before letting them roam the yard?

Yeah, you need to kiddie proof the environment, other than that there is no better incubator or brooder than momma. It is heartwarming to watch the little family as they grow.

If you take them overnight she might not take them back.
