My peacock is losing his train

I’m curious and hope someone can help.? I have a peacock and peahen my peacock has started losing his train. Is this normal and does it mean breeding season is over?
We’ve had him for over a year he adopted us so not sure of his age I’m guessing 5 or more years. His train measured over 5 feet. The peahen is 2to 3 years I bought her this early summer. I’ve kept them both caged as advised but he was use to free ranging before I got her and know he misses coming and going as he pleases but am afraid if I let them out they might disappear? I have a lot invested and don’t want them to run off . What should I do.? I was told to keep them caged till breedseason was over, him losing feathers is it over?

Yes, the peacocks will lose their trains at the end of every breeding season, which is about now, this is normal.

Yes. losing the train is a signal that the breeding season is nearing the end. He is still fertile and can perform his duties for some time yet even without the train. You were advised to pen them so the hen would not wander off and set a nest in an unprotected area and get taken by a predator most likely. The hen can remain fertile for a month or more depending on how well she was bred. If you want to turn the cock out go ahead, you can let him back in when he is pacing the pen door.
