I am planning waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay far in advance. These plans won't be put into effect for another 10-30 years. I just really want to talk about them. This is also just me writing them down so I don't forget.
For chickens:
Once I am out of college and have a secure job, as well as a place to put the coop, I'd like to get some bantams. I'd like 5, to be precise.
-Bantam EE
-Bantam barred rock
-bantam cochin
-silver sebright
-probably another bantam EE, but maybe a polish
I'd like to make a 6x6 or 8x8 run, with a 5x4 coop.
Years later, when I'm getting older, and hopefully have married, I'd like to move somewhere with a regular sized house, but LOADS of space on the property.
My plans for when I live there are these:
Chickens first. I'd like to have a 20x20 run, with a 10x10 coop. I'd like to start with 10 birds. I'd like to have at least one layer of every egg color, and then a few breeds that are just completely my favorites and I can't resist. After they're grown, I might get a younger roo, as I've heard that the best setup to keep roos in check is to have mature hens who can put a young roo in his place. I'd then like to periodically add or hatch chicks-I'll definitely have a cochin or two, so I may try it. I'll limit myself to 20 chickens at a time.
Quail would probably come next. I'd like to have a 6x5 'run' for them, with a 4x4 house part. I'd like 10 quail to start. I know that this is WAY more space than they need, but I have been forced to keep my birds too small spaces, and I now want all of my birds to have more than the bare minimum space requirements. I want to set up the quail 'run' to have lots of stuff at different levels for them to fly and hop about.
Ducks would probably be the last addition. I'd like to get 6 ducks. I'd probably want pekins, but I'm still unsure of which breeds I'd like. I'd like to have a 10x12 run for my ducks, and I'm still not sure how much space they need inside their coop- I've been trying to find out somewhere, but apparently there's not a set norm like for chickens. On second thought, maybe I'll do a 15x15 run for the ducks. I want them to have a kiddie pool, and some bushes and things to roam around in. I also might try hatching ducks-who knows!
Specifics on construction would come later. I know how I have to predator proof, set up nest boxes, and have ventilation etc. I'm still unable to find the requirements for ducks inside their coop, for some reason. I'll keep looking.
I'd love thoughts on these plans, but please remember this will not happen for years, so I can't directly apply anything right now. I'm making this thread because I'd love to hear other bird owners' thoughts on my setup ideas, and I'll update and come back to this as I get older and things change. This does not have to be an active thread, but rather this is a place for me to write down and talk about ideas that I can't lose, and also be saying to people who know what they're talking about, not just family members.
