My poor baby chick

I came out to my chicken coop and to my surprise I found a baby chick. I was told to leave it with its mama and it would do fine. I got it food and water and checked on it everyday. He is about a week old. Today I came out to see how he was doing and it looks like the other chicken attacked him, maybe stepped on him. I'm not sure his back end is all blooded and he is not going to make it! I feel horrible!! What did I do wrong?????

I will ask my duck expert. She will share it with her chicken friends.
 
A few ideas - first, get him set up in his own space, with an unbreakable mirror. With a damp cloth wipe him down to get a good look. Give poultry vitamins with electrolytes in water.

See if you can get a photo uploaded. Post to the Emergencies Forum. There are more chicken experts there than I can possibly contact.

Welcome from Georgia!! I am sorry to hear about your chick. Next time I would separate the mother hen and chick/chicks from the rest of the flock. You could separate the chicks from their mother and raise them for a while in a brooder, but eventually you will have to reintroduce them to the flock and they will be picked on, but at least they will be bigger and better able to handle the initiation.

By the way - from anything I hear from my friends who raise ducklings and chicks, some ducks and chickens can turn on the littles. It seems difficult to predict. A duck, for example, might be an excellent broody, but then turn on the ducklings once hatched. It is mysterious and nerve-wracking. Some people never have any trouble. Others lose little ones before they realize the problem. I hope your little will recover quickly and well. Be sure to set up the brooder properly for the chick. I know about brooding ducklings, but not chicks, and they are not exactly the same, from what I have heard and read.

I agree...I would get this little chick in his own brooder. Put in some stuffed animals to keep him company, a mirror will help him think there are others with him. Brood like you would other chicks, lowering the temp 5 degrees each week until he is 5 or 6 weeks of age.

I hope the little guy pulls thru.
