My poor girls w/o food, water or shelter in 20-degree temps!

Sorry to hear about your mishap! I'm glad the girls are ok. I had brought mine inside and set them up in the mud room for the first couple of nights of the cold snap. The third night I went out to round them up and they were having none of it! They had no interest in leaving the coop. Ah well. I tried.

So . . . does that mean that temperature below 27 are too cold? Last night it was 10 outside and 20 in the coop. The daytime highs are below freezing too. Poor little girls . . . but I've been thinking they'll be okay . . . How cold is too cold?

We're in Vancouver, WA. Gosh Lea, I've been longing to move to CA for the sun and warmth. I wonder if it matters where you are in CA? Glad your chickens are ok. I put food & water outside the coop during the day . . . which is kind of tricky when it freezes or when it rains (all the time here). Guess I spoil them. *shrug *

We put a heat lamp in the coop last night. That kept them warm (30s). They refused to come out of the coop this morning I was able to coax them out a few minutes ago (around 10).

The red heat lamp made the whole coop glow red, which is expecially funny b/c the coop roof is clear. I'll try to take a pic tonight.

glad your girls are okay, jenn!

i've got their old infrared brooder lamp in our girls' coop, too - and you can see the red glow through the vents and the pop door (before i go out and close up shop for the night). i call it the "coop to the gates of hades" out there, too! hee hee! girls like it, though - staying in the low 40's in their coop as opposed to below freezing outside!
