I thought of that, but I didn't want him to get in trouble for putting them up front or for "favoring" a customer. I don't know their rules and just thought I could make his good intentions into something bad for him.

I wouldn't go into detail about everything he's done, just let them know that he seems to go above & beyond & has always been extremely customer service oriented. I don't think you'd get him in trouble as ppl rarely call for anything other than complain. Maybe you can say something to the effect of "So-n-so has been extremely aware of package contents & takes great pride & care in getting them delievered. He's always been extremely nice & customer-oriented, and is sure to ask if all was well on some live (fragile?) deliveries." Than maybe add that you are aware that ppl rarely call for compliments & that you felt the need to.
